Personality:

When we first meet Homura, she is a new student to the class and gives off a villain type vibe. Madoka feels unusually intimidated by her cold personality, and is asked to show her around the school. Homura warns her about making the contract with Kyuubi, and it is taken more as a threat due to the lack of emotions that Homura fails expressing while warning her. It takes Mami to get murdered by one of the witches for Madoka to see that Homura was only trying to protect her from the dangerous life of becoming a magical girl. She rescues her and her friends numerous times and prevents it from happening.

Homura's attitude is numb and cold, although she's not considered to be cruel except when she tells Madoka to forget about Sayaka and there's no way that her friend can be saved from her choice of making the contract. She's mysterious and protective for unknown reasons, Madoka being the one that she is striving to keep safe more than anyone else. It remains a mystery why Homura is so protective until we see her past, when she was just an average girl in Madoka's shoes. She had no magical powers and was shy and modest, standing behind and watchin while Madoka and Mami fought against the witches. Eventually, their final battle ends where both Mami and Madoka are killed, and Homura makes the wish to Kyuubi to go back in time to protect her friend.

This happens two more times. The second wish she wakes up in the hospital again and tries to protect Madoka by becoming a magical girl through that time period, and it fails. The second time, Homura takes much more seriously and makes a wish to Kyuubi so that she'll go back in time and protect Madoka without her powers. While doing this, Homura changes her entire personality from shy and sweet to cold and emotionless, focusing on only one goal. Homura changed due to her experiences, they had hardened her until she was forced to abandon her emotions in order to succeed at her mission.

After the change of her personality, everything is shown to fall in place and we learn to see how desperate Homura is to save her friend's life. Her attitude has become more bitter from being a witness of Madoka's death over, and over. The reason Homura is so loyal to Madoka is because she was the very first person who was kind and welcoming to her when she needed someone. Although Mami was her friend as well at the time, Madoka was special and accepted her right away.

If there's something Homura hates, it's Kyuubi. Him for tricking innocent females to make the contract and his unusual view on life and fate. Homura hates him so much she will kill him to protect others, although it's useless considering that he cannot die and comes back again.
